Cuba Trip 2017

The Mission Trip:

The Cuba Companionship Ministry of Holy Trinity invites you to savor the flavor of “Cooler Cuba” with our Companion Church San Juan Bautista “SJB” (St. John the Baptist) on its 2017 mission trip to Florencia in the Province of Ciego de Avila. Be a part of our mission of “increasing mutual engagement between the Episcopal Church in the United States (ECUSA) and the Episcopal Church in Cuba (ECC) … this engagement has as its highest purpose the seeking of a closer relationship with God.”  We will leave from Tampa or Orlando on Saturday, November 11, 2017 to Havana and return to Florida on Monday, November 20, from Santa Clara (near Camp Blankingship) or from Camaguey, Cuba.

The MISSIONERS’ itinerary will include the momentous opportunity to attend the Saturday evening and Sunday morning closing services of the Music Festival and the Celebration Service of the 70th Anniversary of the Consecration of the Cathedral Santísima Trinidad in Havana (built during the 1939-1961 episcopacy of Bishop A. Hugo Blankingship, the third and last American Bishop of Cuba. On Monday, November 13, the Holy Trinity Missioners will head East to visit their companion church San Juan Bautista in Florencia, Ciego de Avila Province, Cuba, with anticipated stops in Matanzas (Varadero Beaches), Santa Clara (Camp Blankingship), the city of Ciego de Avila, and companionship time days with both SJB in Florencia and with Santa Maria in Perea (companioned with 3 Florida churches in Putnam County).

Basic travel cost for 10-day Missioners trip: $1600 per person, including a registration deposit of $600 up front for advanced stateside expenses and $1000 in US Cash ($100 per day estimate) to be group-pooled in Cuba for church or hotel accommodations, most meals, bus/taxi ground transportation, tips and some “love-offerings” to host churches. Options available to reduce costs: Skip Havana and join us in Matanzas/Varadero or Santa Clara via Southwest Airlines.

The Musicians’ Trip and 70th Anniversary of the Cathedral Santísima Trinidad in Havana:

Marilyn will also be coordinating with the Diocese of Cuba the 8th Festival Internacional de Música, taking place at the Episcopal Cathedral in Havana from Thursday, November 9 through Sunday, November 12. This event is intended for singers, ringers, and instrumentalists, who will participate in seminars, rehearsals, concerts, and services and “just jam” with our Cuban counterpart musicians. Several members of Holy Trinity’s choir have already signed up and will join choir members/musicians from other Episcopal churches for this musical event leading up to the 70th Anniversary Celebrations of the Consecration of the Cathedral Santísima Trinidad. Musical entries for Americans will be offered and prepared in advance under the direction of Virginia Theological Seminarian, tenor Gus Chrysson. We will arrive in Havana on Wednesday, November 8, with optional return dates to Tampa or Orlando beginning Monday, November 13 or later. And our own Tony Offerle and Marilyn are staying after the Festival’s conclusion to perform in other venues in Havana and beyond. An advance registration deposit of $250 for religious visa and Festival fee is required. Coordinating with travel guide Marilyn, participants will be responsible for reserving their own airline arrangements. Plan on bringing a minimum of $100 per day IN CASH to cover group-pooling costs of accommodations, meals, ground transportation.

Please contact Marilyn Peterson at mwpeterson@bellsouth.net or 352-283-3148 if you are interested in registering for either of these “engaging” opportunities. Space is limited and the passenger rosters for both trips must be completed by July 2, 2017.
