SPIRITUALITY

Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is valuable in every way, because it promises life both for the present and for the future.

Good News Translation

Being Christian is more than a Sunday thing.

Spirituality means living day to day the new life in Christ that God gives us in baptism and the eucharist.

Its aim? To grow “completely as God wants us to be, just like Christ himself.”

That means living life just as Jesus, our model and mentor, did — with love for both God and neighbor (friend or foe) as our driving force.

In the Bible (read Matthew 6:1-18), Jesus gives us three “spiritual fitness” exercises to help us do that: almsgiving (sharing with others in need), prayer (talking to God), and fasting (learning self-control over self-indulgence).

Those practices tame our egos to make room in our lives for God and neighbor, rather them forgetting or fighting them — which is what sin is all about.

Does spirituality work? That’s up to how much you put into it. But generations of saints prove that Jesus’ vision and values do indeed work — if we practice them!
